GW 6 – Arsenal vs Tottenham

The North London Derby is here! I am filled with anticipation and the usual nerves this games throws. One of the few true derby games remaining in the modern Premier League era; this match throws form to oneside, only pure grit and determination get a win in such games.

The Art of Analysis breakdown is here with all the usual previews and predictions.

The Lineup:

David Raya is our new number 1. There is said it. I concede the GK rotation I may have wanted isn’t happening. But it will be present in the longer run of the league and the cup games. Having said that, and whilst I do feel for Ramsdale, given the performance from Raya, the sheer comfort he has on the ball and the trust he has instilled in the back line. It is impossible not to start him!

As with all derby games a certain level of physicality is always ever present. For that reason alone I think Kai Havertz starts this game in the 8 role. Trossards smaller stature presents a risk of getting physically dominated in an aggressive game, the support Kai should provide both on and off the ball is enough to provide him some space on the flanks.

My only change from the game on Wednesday night would be at LB. I would prefer Tomiyasu starting there. He is a stronger profile than Zinchenko, which again I feel is needed in a derby. Not to mention he still has the ability to cut inside as a central CB or CM allowing for Rice to press forward when needed. However the main reason for my opting of him is simply, he is a better defender than Zinchenko.

On Wednesday night the majority of the counter attacking chances came from the left flank. Where Zinchenko was either caught out of position due to his inversion, or simply out done by pace and strength of a winger. On another night PSV could have scored through his induvial errors. It is certainly not a risk I am willing to take on Sunday!

The History:

Last season, Arsenal beat their lifeless north London rivals twice, including their first Premier League away win at Tottenham since 2014. However, Spurs have since been revitalized by Ange Postecoglou’s arrival and are currently level on points with the Gunners.

After a narrow win over Sheffield United last weekend, Tottenham will be confident of securing their first league win at the Emirates since 2010. However, Arsenal showed their class in midweek with a convincing 4-0 victory over PSV in their Champions League return. The Gunners showed their ability to exploit teams that give them space in transition, which could be a key factor in the derby.

Keys to winning:

From speaking to Celtic fans Ange is a stickler for his tactical approach and is unlikely to change their method of play. Consequently I can see this being a game where Mikel is able to take full control. However, nothing is guaranteed in a derby and anything goes.

Sure there is no longer the guaranteed Harry Kane penalty, however, there is a new and frankly poor referee team taking control of this match. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few dubious refereeing decisions occurred.

Stopping James Maddison from having any influence in midfield will be key to a decisive Arsenal win. As was the case in Leicester he is the main man to connect defence and attack for Tottenham as well as galvanising them to go forward. I expect once more the physicality that Kai brings to the game to help Declan Rice in controlling Maddison and outright removing his influence on the game.

On Wednesday we saw the most clinical crisp striking I have every seen from an Arsenal frontline. There were as potent up front as prime Van Persie, as clinical as Adebayor as powerful with their shots as a pre injury Eduardo it was sublime! The exact same needs to happen here.

Jesus starts, Jesus scores! It has to be the main man leading the line once more. This is it nothing more nothing less. He leads from the front. Utilise his excellent feet and strength to interplay from deep and bring the wingers inside. Then he scores and assists that’s it once more.

Conclusion:

It’s the north London derby. No matter what I write what I guess. Anything and everything does happen. We’ve seen red cards, penalties, managers sent off, you name it and it has happened.

Tactically Arsenal are better, comparing the squads Arsenal are stronger, throw in the fans again Arsenal win there. This should be a convincing Arsenal win. But by no means will it be easy.

Predictions:

POTM: Jesus

Scoreline 2 – 0 to The Arsenal

Suggested Bet: Gabriel Jesus anytime goal scorer.
