Arsenal vs Manchester City – Community Shield Preview & Predictions

As we approach the start of the new Premier League season with all the excitement, anticipation, and hope that a new season brings for all fans. We must first cast our attention to the Community Shield. Glorified friendly… well only if you lose it that is!

What some view as a friendly others see as an indication of just how the top teams intend to play and kick start their season, you can be sure both Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola see it that way.

Despite what may be said to the media post the 90 minutes, this game matters to both managers and players. Who each wish to galvanise their season and get that first W.

A rivalry with History:

Mikel has gone up against Pep a whopping 10 times since he joined as manager in December 20th 2019. In that team he has a record of 1 win and 9 Losses. With a goal record of 7 against Man City who in turn have scored 24 against Arsenal. These certainly are not numbers that flatter The Gunners.

As such bookmakers have Arsenal at 4/1 underdogs with Man City clear favourites at 7/4 favourites. However, is this a true and accurate reflection of both teams currently or just a bias based on history.

The Past vs The Present:

Whilst Arsenals record against Man City is poor to say the least, what the numbers do not reflect is the ever changing Arsenal side. With their transition to becoming a more recognisable force in the Prem evident in the title charge last year. Arteta’s “Trust the Process” mentality has really paid dividends. Now Arsenal find themselves in arguably their strongest position yet. With world class additions in Timber and Rice, and perhaps quality in Havertz too. Arsenal are clearly on the up… but can the same be said for Pep and his City side.

2023 saw Man City achieve it all. The treble and feat held in such high regard it was viewed as the Everest of modern football. Well, so would argue fans on either side of Manchester bizarrely. As it is Sir Alex Ferguson himself who despite achieving the treble first, still insisted the Invincibles of Arsenal manager by Mr Wenger remain the true pinnacle of footballing achievement.

Following their success Man City saw their 1st XI begin to drift with goals being achieved in the Prem. Some sought out new challenges elsewhere whilst otherwise saw an offer too good to refuse. Talismanic midfielder and arguably Pep’s key man Ilkay Gundogan has left for Barcelona. Riyad Mahrez has departed for the delights of Arabia. Their starting XI is beginning to look different and on the wrong side of 30. Both Walker and De Bruyne are beginning to show their age. New signing Kovacic may prove shrewd but certainly has big boots to fill. Speaking of Phil Foden now appears a starter, lauded by fans, he can no longer hide behind substitute appearances during a 4-0 thrashing. It certainly is a different side than the ones whose heroics shone last season.

Conclusions:

There is a clear palpable tension in the air, whilst a glorified friendly it may be both managers are sure to fight tooth and nail for the first piece of silver the season has to offer. Mikel has spent the pre-season experimenting with double inverted wingbacks to impact the midfield. Arguably the key to the success last season, now with Timber a lightning rod of innovation and talent is at Mikels disposal. Should Arsenal be victorious expect this young Dutchman to flourish in his dual role.

However, Pep is no slouch, often accused of over managing and over analysing his teams play. What cannot be denied is the quality at his disposal. Despite an aging side, they still possess the killer instinct. With Haaland in front it will be no easy feat to stop their prolific goal scorer. I expect a feisty affair with a few goals to share.

My prediction 3-2 to The Arsenal.
