The Art of Analysis UCL preview is back. This time for the round of 16 UCL first leg tie away to Porto. This round has posed a challenge for Arsenal historically (often facing the competition winners). But this is a different Arsenal, and here we believe they have a method of victory at hand!
The Lineup:
Once again I am predicting no changes from the team that decimated their last few games in the premier league! If it is a winning formula then why change it. Where I do expect changes to occur however is on the bench, with Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe and perhaps a few others excepting to get some minutes from the bench tonight!
Despite continued injury concerns in defense and attack, the lineup deployed against Liverpool, featuring Kiwior replacing Zinchenko and Havertz operating as a false 9 to facilitate runs from Martinelli, Saka, and Ødegaard, arguably remains Arsenal’s most potent and adaptable attacking unit.
This formation offers Mikel Arteta the strongest hand to deal with both open, attacking opponents and those employing a low defensive block, a common obstacle for the Gunners.
Similar to the Burnley encounter, Trossard could start upfront, potentially interchanging with Havertz. This fluidity would allow Trossard to roam across the attacking line, while Havertz’s physical presence would draw defenders and create space for his teammates.
Tactico Teta:
Porto are a proud side, with a defined tactical approach to their play. They unlike the likes of Burnely and West Ham are not expected to sit back and play a low block for 90 minutes. Instead expect direct runs an attempt to outmuscle our midfield and attacks down the flanks.
It is for this reason I feel the lineup that faced Liverpool is best positioned to get the job done tonight. Mikel will need to utilise the physicality on offer from Kai and Rice in the middle to enable our wingers to drift into space and play. The backline must be strong and once again Jakub Kiwior is going to be asked a play with no mistakes for 90 minutes.
Porto boss Conceição knows he needs a cautious start against Arsenal, the deadliest first-half team in the Champions League. The Gunners have netted a remarkable 12 goals before the break this season, scoring in every opening 45 minutes – a European Cup record.
Moreover, Arteta’s men are on fire offensively, bagging five goals in consecutive away Premier League games for the first time in the club’s history. As a result I expect both teams to have the ability to find the back of the net, with the edge going to Mikels mighty gunners. However, the defensive ability offered by both teams is also heavily favoured to Arsenal. Mikel must ensure they don’t faulter if he also wants to leave Portugal with a clean sheet.
Predictions:
Scoreline: Porto 0 – Arsenal 3
MOTM: Bukayo Saka
Suggested Bet: Arsenal win & Saka anytime goal scorer.
