Atalanta vs Arsenal
The revamped, league style system of the new Champions League is here. With it comes more games, and even a Thursday night UCL fixtures. Of course Arsenal are picked for a Thursday night away game, whilst having to endure many injuries and the dilemma of Man City away on the weekend with short rest.
Mikel’s mighty men have a tough task on their hands, and so does Arteta in managing this squad.
Predicted XI
Rotation will be key for Mikel, a balancing act is needed for us to prosper. With tough games on the horizon and an injured squad. Arsenal is currently facing a significant injury crisis. Key players like Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Odegaard are doubtful for upcoming matches. Recent signings Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino, along with other squad members, are also sidelined.
Saka’s injury, sustained in the Tottenham match, raises concerns about his availability. Odegaard is expected to be out for several weeks. The club will provide updates on both players before their next match. If Saka and Odegaard are unable to play, Jorginho and Gabriel Jesus are likely to fill in.
Atalanta received a boost with the return of Berat Djimsiti, Nicolo Zaniolo, and former Arsenal player Sead Kolasinac for their victory over Fiorentina. However, Rafael Toloi, Ben Godfrey, Giorgio Scalvini, and Gianluca Scamacca remain sidelined.
With Declan Rice fit and available it would make sense he takes his starting position back. However, with Saka tired and key for the game away to Man City. I hope to see rotation here with Nwaneri starting.
Arteta has also shown patience and trust in Martinelli. Once again viewing him as key, likely a key starter for City too. Hence another rotational change needed with Raheem Sterling starting at LW.
The only one that we may get wrong here is Trossard. Having had a solid display against Spurs. He may be needing a rest. With Jesus coming in late in that game, there is an argument to give him minutes here too. We think Mikel will favour Trossard, but can certainly see a scope for Jesus to be starting instead.
History Making
In what is a rare first for two historic clubs. This game on Thursday night will prove to be the first ever competitive meeting between the two teams.
Atalanta has experienced a mixed start to the Serie A season, currently occupying eighth place with six points from four matches. Despite their inconsistent domestic form, Atalanta remains a formidable opponent, particularly in European competitions. Under the guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini, the team has a reputation for outperforming expectations against top-tier clubs. Arsenal will undoubtedly be mindful of Gasperini’s tactical acumen and the potential challenges he may present.
Predictions
This is going to be a tough game. With Man City on the horizon I expect Mikel to make some interesting rotational changes to the starting XI. With that in mind, it will affect how we play. Expect a more solid defensive display relying on the counter and of course our set piece threat.
